Six coastal communities (Nukuleka, Makaunga, Talafo’ou, Navutoka, Manuka and Kolonga), on Tongatapu (the main island of Tonga) are highly susceptible to the impacts of climate change, disaster risks (e.g.: tsunami) and sea level rise, storm surge and coastal erosion.
The communities are highly vulnerable due to their low topographic elevation (+2m above mean sea level).
Poor regulation to enforce inappropriate land use planning in high risk areas
Limited capacity and training on “climate resilient” coastal engineering construction within Tonga.

Comprehensive field assessment of the coastal risks including beach profiles, sediment analysis and snorkel surveys of nearshore reef.
Site specific recommendations for engineering interventions to protect local sediment budgets.

Innovative designs to help re-instate natural ecosystem and beach dynamics.
